Renovations and remodeling projects have the tendency to be challenging endeavors for various reasons. Often, the given set of parameters and the desired program are in direct opposition to one another. Other times, one is called in to fix fundamental design mistakes made by a previous designer. The Seacrest project had all of these characteristics and a few more just to make the it that much more interesting. Situated on a small bluff overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, the two story, 3,500 SF masonry house was purchased by the client with an eye to remodeling it from the inception. The spaces of first floor were choppy and dysfunctional. More importantly, the spaces neglected the dramatic view and relationship of the gulf beyond. The finishes also were not of the quality necessary for a luxurious house on the gulf and needed to be upgraded.
The first order of business was to open the space up while at the same time allowing for intimate areas for dining, lounging and entertaining. The owners entertain friends, family and business associates frequently and needed the spaces to flow during parties, and also when it would just be the two of them. Twenty feet of mahogany pocketing lift and slide doors open up the entire living area to a porch and gulf beyond allowing for an easy transition from exterior to interior space. A large kitchen island separates the functional aspect of the kitchen, while providing a splendid stage for the placement of culinary delights. Adjacent to the island is a glass top bar which can be dramatically lit and gives the effect of being a solid piece of ice, perfect for providing guests with their beverage of choice.
The second floor also suffered from a disorganized configuration. By eliminating an unnecessary bedroom and bathroom, the master suite could be organized to have his and hers baths and ample closets. The Master bedroom was opened up to the gulf with twelve foot lift and slide doors which opened up to a very well appointed private porch with swing bed allowing for expansive views of the sunset.
Braulio Casas Architects, were also charged with executing the interior design of the house. In keeping with the overall design of the architecture, the lines throughout the house are intended to be classic yet minimal and clean. The intention was to give the house a new air of sophisticated elegance and unpretentious luxury. The palette was derived from the colors of the gulf and the sea. Grays, soft blues and unexpected hints of lavender, pink and black give the ensemble an airy coastal feel without being trite.
